about me

Practically imperfect in every way. Start with a lot of silliness. Mix in some insecurities and a handful of awkwardness. Add a pound of naivety, innocence, and child-like wonderings. Blend well. Half-bake and top off with a sprinkle of imagination and dollop of dreams. It’s the recipe for me!

And I believe that our education like, such as South Africa, and, the Iraq, everywhere like such as. And I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., or should help South Africa, and should help the Iraq and the Asian countries, so we will be able to build up our future for our children."

Watch The December Sky…

April 13, 2005

Because pigs will be flying!

Several weeks ago, I spoke with an academic advisor to make sure I had all of my general education requirements fulfilled to graduate in December. She told me there were two problems with my transcripts.

The first problem was easily resolved. I needed to obtain my high school transcripts to show that I’d taken a chemistry class in high school. With that information, my earth science credits would count toward my degree.

The second problem was a bit stickier. I had taken a math class for elementary teachers while I was in the education program. I could count the class now that I’m once again an art major if I had declared elementary education as my major at that time. I change my major so often, that I didn’t bother to change it to elementary ed that semester.

I dropped off my high school transcripts on Tuesday, and was, coincidentally, assigned to speak with the very same advisor that needed to approve my math credits. Without any hesitation, he went into his computer and changed my major to elementary education for the semester I had the math class. I’m registered for ceramics in the spring, ceramics in the summer, and two art history classes plus an advanced drawing class in the fall.

It will be difficult to take the two art history classes concurrently, but I know other students who have done it successfully. And I’m more than a little nervous about the drawing class since I’ve been working exclusively with three-dimensional art since 1993. But if I can make it through the fall, I WILL GRADUATE IN DECEMBER!

Cool. I’m very jealous. Hopefully next spring for me.

Being once again very confused, I remembered that I’d mentioned the difference in US and UK systems before. Only just went back to see your response.

Nope, no GPA, but coursework instead. This year, for example, I have four projects at various points in the year (one computing, one review of papers and two experiments), each of them counting for 10%. That leaves 60% resting on four exams at the end of the year, each paper counting 15%. The combination of these then determines the ‘class’ I get, which is 1st, 2i, 2ii, 3rd, pass or fail (in descending order). Each year is similar, and you have to pass each to graduate at the end of the third. (I’m doing a four year course, but that’s not usual.)

Seeing it written down like that makes it seem quite a strange system too. The problem with it for me is that I can get away with doing almost no work for most of the year, leaving me with HORRIFIC amounts to cram into the last few weeks before the VERY important exams. Help!

PS Glad to see so many posts from you recently. Good to have you back!

It’s the spark of an idea that hits me unexpectedly. It’s the silly wonderings I have after a whirlwind of thoughts. It’s about creativity, inspiration, and imagination. But sometimes, it’s just about eating noodles.
